Back in the early 1990’s when l opened the first email marketing company in the world, and ushered in the era of Internet Marketing l will never forget what one of my first clients said to me.
His name was Jeff and he said, “Mark we want to make money too!”
You see l had just sent out an email for his business to a targeted list of prospects, that had all subscribed to receive email ads.
So, l asked him if he made any sales. And my customer replied, “Yes l made several sales but my Advertisment cost more than what l made in sales. You are the only one that made a profit!”
Well, l was quite taken back, and after a moment l politely explained that no one in the world could do what he was asking, which was guarantee increased sales for advertising a product.
Nonetheless that was the expectation of nearly all my clients! High expectations indeed.
Flash forward 25 years later and oh my how things have changed.
CMO Today, the blog of the Wall Street Journal, reported that Facebook would soon only charge advertisers if their Ads could be seen.
According to CMO WSJ, ” Facebook will soon give marketers the option to pay only if entire ad units appear on users’ screens..”
To which my initial reaction was, ” What The #&$@?” “You mean to tell me Facebook, whose founder is one of the richest people on the planet, makes all those billions by charging for Ads no one can see, and everyone is ok with that?”
If l had dared tried to pull that back in 1990, there would have been a mob outside my home with pitchforks and burning torches, and justifiably so!
Well, to be fair to Facebook, CMO WSJ did report that FB was trying to rectify the situation. According to the blog, ” Marketers will likely have to pay a premium for the option, which will apply to both display and video ads. Facebook is still ironing out the details”
So apparently soon Facebook will only charge you if your Ad can be seen. But you will have to pay extra for the privilege!
I know Facebook is not the only one guilty of such practices. Google, Youtube, and many other online sites have made similar confessions.
Well, l have never forgotten the desire and demand from my first clients for guaranteed sales. Indeed it’s been a burning drive and focus of mine for at least the last 10 years. And l say it’s high time we started giving clients what they want and need.
